CAIRO – Famous young Indian actress Monica has decided to leave the life of lights behind her back, choosing to revert to Islam, don Islamic headscarf and quit the film industry, Times of India reported on Saturday, May 31.

“I don’t convert for the reason of love or money, am not such a person. I like Islam principles so that I converted as an Islam,” she was quoted by Muslim Mirror.

“Hereafter I won’t act in the film, it gives some pain but I don’t change my mind,” the young actress added.

According to Indian media, Monica’s decision was announced during a news conference on Friday in which she released photos showing her wearing traditional modest costume and a hijab.

Changing her name to MG Rahima However, she did not reveal reasons behind her decision to join the world’s fastest growing religion.

The Azhagi actress started her career as a child artiste in Tamil cinema and has acted in more than 50 films. She is also the popular face in other South Indian film industries like Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada.

Monica, who had won Tamil Nadu State Award as a best child actor for her performance in Vijaykanth starrer En Aasai Machan, is known for few of the Tamil movies like Azhagi, Imsai Arasan 23m Pulakesi and Silandhi.

In 2001, Monica had changed her name a Paravana for Malayalam film industry. The actress was last seen in Tamil film Jannal Oram, which was released in 2013, November.

Monica is not the first Indian celebrity to revert to Islam this year.

Earlier in February, reports said that both musicians AR Rahman and Yuvan Shankar Raja have taken the same decision to revert to Islam.

There are some 180 million Muslims in Hindu-majority India.

As per official statistics just released, Dubai has seen over 1,000 new Muslims at the Islamic Information Centre of the Dubai government-run Dar Al Ber Society this year so far.

A senior official at the Centre said as many as 1,063 residents from different nationalities converted to Islam.

Rashid Aljunaibi, Director of the centre located at the December 02 road by Al Satwa Roundabout, Bur Dubai, said hundreds of people visited the centre on a daily basis.

“About 205 of them embraced Islam in January 2014 in comparison to 238 in February, 237 in March, and 383 in April.”

He said the Dubai International Peace Convention saw the conversion of over 250 people. “Our staff, scholars and preachers at the Islamic Information Centre helped 48 of them to convert to Islam during the three-day event.”

Aljunaibi said the centre spares no effort in introducing Islam to non-Muslim communities in the easiest, most tolerant and persuasive way.

He added that people are attracted to the merciful and rational teachings of Islam which orders its followers to be honest, fair and kind to all.

Aljunaibi said the new Muslims hailed from the Philippines, China, India, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Cameron, Kenya, Nigeria, USA, Italy, Germany, Britain, Ireland, Australia, Myanmar, Syria, Jordan, as well as Latin American countries.

“A unified certificate is issued to authenticate the conversion of any new Muslim to Islam in association with the Dubai Courts, and the Department of Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities in Dubai.”

Pakistani actress Veena Malik has announced she is quitting commercial films and will only take part in projects with religious and social messages as an Islamic cleric has changed her life completely.

“I have quit the show-biz industry. From now onwards, I will not perform in Pakistani and Indian movies and plays,” said the 29-year-old actress who created a storm by posing topless for an Indian magazine.

“I am also going to refuse Indian film producers with whom I had agreed to work in their movies,” she said in an interview to a Pakistani journalist in Saudi Arabia, where she had gone to perform ‘Umrah’ with her Dubai-based husband Asad Bashir Khan Khattak and his family.

Malik said she would continue to “engage in any project which aims for welfare or social development” but would not be part of any new films.

She said religious scholar Maulana Tariq Jameel had changed her life completely. “Maulana sahib made me promise not to take off my dupatta (head scarf). And I will fulfil this promise for the rest of my life,” she said.

Malik said well-wishers from across the globe, including Indians and Pakistanis, have been congratulating her and Khattak on her decision.

“Like other humans I have also committed mistakes. I have sought forgiveness of my mistakes from God. Now I want to work for the welfare of the people of Pakistan,” she said.

Malik asked people to pray that she would be able to stick to the change in her life.
