Saudi Restricts Politics in Hajj

JEDDAH – Amid the current political turmoil surrounding US-led airstrikes on the so-called Islamic State (ISIL), Saudi officials have announced that no political slogans will be allowed during hajj, expected to kick off later this week.

“Behavior that spoils the pilgrimage atmosphere, endangers the lives of the pilgrims or distracts these pilgrims away from their main pursuit will be totally prevented,” Saudi Interior Minister Prince Mohammed bin Naif bin Abdulaziz was quoted by the Anadolu Agency on Monday, September 29.

Prince Mohammed, who is chairman of the Supreme Haj Committee, was speaking to reporters in Mina after inspecting the preparedness of the Kingdom’s security agencies for Haj.

“All security agencies will work to prevent any behavior that contradicts the pilgrimage ritual and arrest those who make it,” he was quoted by the official Saudi news agency.

Saudi Arabia expects to receive this year millions of Muslims from different parts of the world who will go to the country to perform the annual pilgrimage ritual.

Millions of Muslims from around the world pour into Makkah every year to perform hajj, one of the five pillars of Islam.

Hajj consists of several ceremonies, which are meant to symbolize the essential concepts of the Islamic faith, and to commemorate the trials of Prophet Abraham and his family.

Every able-bodied adult Muslim who can financially afford the trip must perform hajj at least once in a lifetime.

Hajj is officially expected to fall between October 2 and 7, with the climax falling on October 3 when the faithful descend the Mount `Arafat.
