Muslim city mentors support students in innovative supplementary school
This month the Islamic Circles Supplementary Schools (ICSS) launched their latest charitable and educational venture, a weekend supplementary school in Canary Wharf, – ‘The Canary Wharf Supplementary School’ (CWSS).
The ICSS is entirely volunteer run, and supplements the work already being done by the local schools by providing additional support in core curriculum subjects.
The launch of CWSS was supported by Treasury Minister Stephen Timms MP, and by John Garwood, Group Company Secretary of the Canary Wharf Group plc. He said ‘Thank you for the welcome last night – I was very impressed with the obvious commitment of you all’
The school is open to those of all faiths, and will be targeted at 11-16 year olds. Additional support will be given to students in core subjects of English, Maths and Science.
It will run along the same successful model as the ICSS in the London Borough of Newham, which relies on young professionals from the local area to provide educational support and act as mentors for young students.
Currently the volunteer teachers at CWSS are from many ethnic and religious backgrounds, ranging from City professionals to local businessmen and women.
CWSS is also working with businesses in Canary Wharf, which is home to many top corporate organisations to recruit further city volunteers to teach in the Saturday school.
The school is founded and operates on traditional Islamic principles of altruism, goodwill and civic participation.
