What Are the Five Pillars of Islam

Islam is the religion of peace and brotherhood which is based on five fundamentals or pillars. These five pillars are the core of Islam who must be maintained to be a Muslim. These are basic frameworks for a Muslim. The five pillars are-

  • Sahada (Creed),
  • Salat (Daily prayer),
  • Sawm (Fasting during the month of Ramadan),
  • Zakat (almsgiving)  and
  • Hajj (the pilgrimage to Mecca )at least once in a lifetime

Shahada or Creed reciting and believing the statement that Allah is one and there is no other Lord and Hazrat Muhammad (SM) is the last messenger sent by Allah. Salat is the integration daily prayer that a Muslim must do five times a day and these are- Fajr, Dhuhr, Asr, Maghrib, and Isha’a. While Salat a Muslim has to follow there are various set of rules which are broadly discussed in the holy Quran and Hadith.

Sawn is the process of fasting during the month of Ramadan from dawn to dusk and it is mandatory from the age of 11. Zakat is the ritual of charitable giving and it is must who are privileged. And Hajj is a pilgrimage which has to be done in the Arabic month of Dhu al-Hijjah and every Muslim has to do it once in their lifetime if they are able to do so.
